Oregon Democratic donor says he just wanted good inaugural tickets
The Oregonian
More than anyone else in Oregon, Win McCormack is helping pay for Barack Obama's inaugural celebrations.

McCormack, a longtime publisher and writer who has become one of the state's largest Democratic donors, gave the maximum $50,000 allowed to the committee and is credited with raising another $50,000 from others.

McCormack, the heir to a Midwestern banking fortune, shrugged off the contribution, saying he was just looking for good tickets to the inaugural activities.

"It's a great moment in American history," he said. "I think he's the Democratic leader with the most potential for greatness since Bobby (Kennedy). And I want to be part of that moment."....

....McCormack gave nearly $350,000 to Democratic presidential and congressional candidates in the past two elections. And in the past two years, he gave $333,000 to local and state candidates and ballot measure campaigns in Oregon.

On top of that, he made the biggest political donation of his life -- $1 million -- to an independent voter turnout group seeking to topple Bush in 2004. The group, America Coming Together, operated independently of the Democratic Party so that wealthy donors could exceed federal campaign finance limits....

....And last year, he wrote a book -- "You Don't Know Me, A Citizen's Guide to Republican Family Values" -- that chronicled dozens of sex scandals involving Republican figures. He thought Republican sexual hypocrisy was inextricably linked to the party's misdeeds in government.

McCormack was reared in Greenwich, Conn., the son of a successful New York lawyer, who had grown up poor, and a mother from a storied family.

His maternal ancestors first made money as papermakers in early 18th-century New England and then in a gunpowder business that rivaled the DuPonts'.

McCormack's great-grandfather founded the Northern Trust Company Bank in Chicago and, with his sons, started Illinois Tool Works, a Fortune 500 company. ....

...He began fundraising for Obama, to the point that he has a little trouble remembering just what he has done. For example, he's not sure he actually raised another $50,000 for the inaugural committee, as it claims.

Still, he added with a smile and a tap of his pipe, "I'm willing to take credit for it."
He also grins when asked what else he might seek during his trip to Washington. Does he want an ambassadorship or something?

"Well," he replied, "I want to serve on the National Endowment for the Humanities. ... I'm going to try to get an appointment to that. And, you know, being an ambassador might be fun, in the second term. I don't have time for it now."

1/17/09 Senator Chris Dodd Is Not Welcome At Obama Inaguration

Washington DC Police Have plastered the street lamp poles in a central part of the city with big red signs "WARNING" all that "

This area has been declared a PROSTITUTION FREE ZONE"

This sign--one of a whole bunch D.C. police have posted between 4th and 5th streets NW from Eye to L streets could possibly subject Chris Dodd to arrest if he were to go to the Obama inauguration

I'm thinking at least some of the Greenwich residents visiting Washington might want to get themselves a souvenir of their visit to Washington, like a nice big red sign declaring Chis Dodd Keep Out, or something like that.

Greenwich union heads buoyed by Tesei meeting

Union leaders emerged from a meeting with First Selectman Peter Tesei on Friday upbeat about their chances of avoiding layoffs of their members by the town as a cost-cutting measure.

"Layoffs are the absolute worst-case avenue. I am optimistic that there's other avenues being looked at, and the first selectman is not looking to take the easy way out," said Roger Taranto, steward of Teamsters Local 456, which represents about 500 tradesmen in parks, public works and several other departments.

Taranto and the heads of the other municipal employee unions spent about two hours discussing the town's budget woes with Tesei, Greenwich's chief elected official.

"We're all in this together right now. It's not anything anybody did or anybody could have seen six months ago. We are where we are," Taranto said.

Tesei echoed Taranto's assessment of the meeting's tenor.

"It was a very productive meeting," Tesei said. "It certainly established a framework for ongoing communication."

On Wednesday, Tesei announced that he could seek to cut as many as 70 jobs from the town's non-school work force of 1,020 employees -- some through layoffs and others by attrition -- to make up for declining revenues.

Public safety, education and employees at the town-owned Nathaniel Witherell nursing home would be spared from the cuts, Tesei has said.

The decision to cut that work force comes down to a choice between reducing operating expenses or raising taxes beyond the customary 2 to 4 percent rate per year that residents have grown accustomed to in Greenwich during the past decade, said Tesei, who is opposed to raising taxes in the current recession.......
